Canyon Vista Medical Center recently launched (June 2023) a new residency program for Pharmacy affiliated with the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, the first rural pharmacy residency program for University of Arizona.
Our Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to provide aspiring pharmacists with a comprehensive and immersive experience that prepares them for leadership roles in healthcare. As a resident, you will have the chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the pharmacy field, gain hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, and develop the skills necessary to excel in patient care, research, and teaching.

The Program
Welcome, to the Pharmacy Residency Program at the Canyon Vista Medical Center. We are a 100-bed hospital in Sierra Vista, AZ. We are excited to have you and eager to train you to be the pharmacist you aspire to be. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month postgraduate program.
Our residency program strives to strengthen its residents, challenging their limits and providing guidance while working under pressure. Your knowledge of pharmacy practice will grow exponentially.
We have applied for ASHP Accreditation and are currently Candidate Status.
Canyon Vista Medical Center offers two PGY1 Pharmacy residents each year.
Why Canyon Vista Medical Center?
Unique patient population: CVMC covers pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations in a rural area. This gives residents inpatient experience in various areas, especially for residents who seek PGY2.
Team-based work environment: Our pharmacy is extremely proud to be serving our community with team-based practices and patient focused relationships.
Individualized training: The 12-month program is tailored based on residents’ interests and goals. The program team provides structure to reach their goals, and the program director nurtures residents’ well-being and assists in building resiliency.

The Canyon Vista Medical Center residency program participates in the ASHP-associated Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Services for applications and the National Matching Service (NMS) for the residency matching process.
All components listed below must be received within PhORCAS by the appointed application deadline date, which is usually set in early January.
- Applicant letter of intent
- Extracurricular and professional activities
- Minimum two completed references within PhORCAS; additional letters will be accepted at the discretion of each individual program
- Official transcript from an accredited college of pharmacy; transcripts will be accepted from college of Pharmacy who have been awarded Candidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE)
The Interview will be offered either onsite (within 150 miles driving distance) or virtually (beyond 150 miles driving distance).

2023/2024 Pharmacy Resident
Dr. Mario Sanchez, PGY1, graduated from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, May 2023. He completed his General Medicine APPE rotation at CVMC in October and pursued residency with CVMC. Mario brings a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and work with all the health professionals at CVMC. He also brings 8 years of retail pharmacy experience and is interested in Critical Care, Emergency, and Infectious Diseases. Outside of work, Mario likes to go hiking, running, cycling, swimming, playing video games, and hanging out with friends and family. |
