Naloxone Distribution Program
Hospitals and emergency departments stand at the forefront of the opioid epidemic, playing a crucial role in addressing opioid use disorder and overdose, extending beyond immediate emergency care. In many instances, these facilities may serve as the primary healthcare providers for individuals with opioid use disorder. Instances of overdose present pivotal opportunities for interventions that can connect patients to opioid use disorder treatment and community resources. Recognizing this, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) has established the Naloxone Distribution Program (NDP). This initiative ensures that individuals at risk of opioid overdose receive a take-home naloxone kit before being discharged from the hospital or emergency department. CVMC takes pride in being the first distributor in Cochise County for this program.
We are working to reduce the number of opioid overdose deaths in Cochise County.
Starting in February of 2024, any patient of our emergency department who is at risk of an opioid overdose or is worried about a loved one can ask for a take-home kit, no questions asked.
